It's that most wonderful time of the year again...

19/12/2009

and this time, I'm beginning to wonder if my sister read past posts about Christmas. Because so far everything is going smoothly. We have a bird. We have consensus. And I may use double cream, when I finally get around to deciding what dessert I can concoct with it. My god, is this finally one of those years where the words, Christmas: food, family, festivities will not inevitably be associated with fiasco?

So far Shanghai Lily is still standing and our cat hasn't delved deep down into her feral being to molest our tannenbaum. My SO made it back from the Bermuda Triangle, otherwise known as Brussels Airport where luggage inevitably is lost (4th time this year). And my outlaws are on their way to the airport to pre-empt the 'worst snow storm in five years' and hopefully fly out on time.

I may just have to sit down and have a drink now because I can hardly believe all of this good fortune.

This is the cheesecake I was on about - has to be done!

150g (51/2oz)
all butter shortbread

25g (1oz) butter

1 orange

250g (9oz) chocolate orange

400g (14oz) soft cheese

2 eggs

142ml pot sour cream

5ml (1tsp) vanilla essence

Method
1.Preheat oven to 150°C, 300°F, gas mark 2. Put the biscuits into a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the biscuits and grated rind of the orange. Press the mixture into a 20cm (8in) loose-bottomed spring-form tin.

2.Break chocolate into pieces and melt in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir until melted. Cool.

3.Mix together cheese, eggs, sour cream and vanilla essence, stir in the chocolate. Spread over biscuit base and level. Bake for 50–55 minutes until slightly soft but just set in the middle. Leave to cool.

Thanks! The jury is still out. Everyone seems to be reacting rather favourably to the Baked Alaska, if only because of all of the snow ;-)
But this sounds delicious too ;-)
We vote tomorrow.

Glad you're having a wonderful Christmas time.
My mother has slipped into her annual EastEnderesque nightmare before Christmas mode.
God I hate these days.
