Whichever way you slice it, this is an election of firsts: first woman to run for president, first woman vice-president who is dumber than a post, oldest president in office, and... breath-takingly, first black president in office.
So as we all turn our eyes to the United (swing) States tonight and wait with bated breath to see whether Americans will really put their vote where their mouth is, I just want to express my fervent hope that the candidate of the day will indeed be Barack Obama.
Finally, the reign of shrub comes to an end. Will tomorrow dawn on hope?

We went to vote this morning with our two kids in tow. The lines are long. Voter turn out has been amazing. Tonight, I hope we celebrate!
We did it! The outpouring of support and well wishes from Europe and across the globe has been incredible to witness. Not all of us are slack-jawed buffoons. For the first time in a long time, I have hope that we can restore our place in the world as a beacon of hope and progress, not a cesspool of ignorance and hate. Here's to humanity!
We elected Obama but hate won out in Florida, Arkansas, Arizona and California where same-sex marriage was banned and adoption rights were taken away. I am thrilled today but daunted by how much further we must go.
I was awake this morning at 6 a.m. when Barack Obama gave his magnificently written speech. And it made me cry, because for the first time in a long time, I actually felt as if the US was back on the road again. There was such hope in his voice, such force and such calm. I keep my fingers crossed that he can maintain the course he has charted for himself during this campaign and I applaud you all for putting an end to the farce known as shrub. I see a new sun...
I am however saddened by the fact that the people of California chose to endorse Proposition 8, thus taking away the rights of people such as Phyllis Lyon. The battle goes on!
